Christmas Eve Eve on the Radio
Posted by toy

Had the pleasure of being a guest on the Rick Bergman radio show on KDKA out of Pittsburgh, PA this afternoon. Rick is a very thoughtful host and I always enjoy our annual chat. His audience called in with some terrific toys for me to appraise, and it is always a big challenge when you can't actually see the items under discussion.

The doll questions can be real stumpers, and I always enjoy the callers with Hot Wheels cars or pressed steel trucks the most.

Well, play time is over, time to dig in get those Christmas presents wrapped!

Thought I'd share the cover of the 12th Edition. The book will be released in late Spring 2008, but here's a preview.

Hop Harrigan, Anyone?
Posted by toy

Was working on the next edition of O'Brien's Collecting Toys today, and came across some toys to add to the Movies, Radio & Television chapter. Hop Harrigan started as a comic book flying ace and moved to 1940s radio on ABC and the Mutual networks. Hop and his mechanically-minded sidekick, Tank Tinker, were among the popular flying adventurers of the time and even fought the Axis during World War II.

Most of the collectibles associated with Hop Harrigan are membership premiums from the Hop Harrigan All American Flying Club. Anyone have images of those items? I'd like to include them in the chapter. Thanks!

Best Christmas Present EVER!!!
Posted by toy

Christmas is right around the corner and I've finally sent out all of my Christmas cards. Haven't finished shopping yet, but I have a plan of attack for next weekend and should be in good shape.

Nostalgia grips me this time of the year and I remember my coolest Christmas ever -- it was the year that I got all 12 of the original Star Wars figures. Not just one or two, Santa delivered all 12 characters!! And yes, I still have them.

It's your turn -- what was the coolest Christmas present you ever received? Click "Comments" below and let's hear from you!

Marx Toys ~ Have You All of Them?
Posted by toy

The "slogan" of the Marx Toy Company is easily recognizable by multiple generations of collectors -- as the world's largest toy manufacturer for decades, Marx toys were present in most 20th century households.

It's always a pleasure to pass on information about fun toy-hobby places to visit and shop. The Official Marx Toy Museum in Glen Dale, West Virginia, will make your "must see" list in a heartbeat if you remember playing with tin wind-ups, plastic playsets, litho cars and trucks, or any of their famous action figures.

Check out their store, the Museum carries a line of re-released toys that are sure to bring back memories as well. It's a nostalgic time of the year, so do yourself a favor and take the online tour of the museum.

What was your favorite Marx toy? Click "Comments" below and let me hear from you!

Toyland News: Bee Movie Nominated
Posted by toy

The Golden Globe Award nominations were announced today, and among them was The Bee Movie (DreamWorks) for Best Animated Feature Film. It's up against Ratatouille (Pixar) and The Simpsons Movie (Gracie Films/Fox) -- as I haven't seen it yet, I can't guess how it will stack up. If you have a guess, click "Comments" below and let's hear how you think the voting will go.

Actually, while reading the nomination list, I realized that this may be the first time in Golden Globe history that all of the nominated films have been featured as PEZ dispensers! The Simpsons dispensers have been available for quite a while, but the Bee Movie and Ratatouille dispensers were released earlier this year.

Toyland News: Tampa Train Show This Weekend
Posted by toy

The guys at Golden Spike Enterprises, Inc. are hosting the 3rd Annual Tampa Model Train Show & Sale this weekend. This two-day show will take place December 15 from 9am to 5pm and December 16 from 10 am to 4pm at the Special Events Center on the Florida State Fairgrounds.

This is the only train show for the year that will be held at this location, so support the young show if you’re in the neighborhood. According to the information I received, more than 250 tables are going to be occupied with all types of trains, and large operating layouts will be on display to keep the discussion lively.

Cool Premiums!
Posted by toy

I spent part of today working on the Premiums chapter of O’Brien’s Collecting Toys. Though the book is devoted primarily to pre-World War II toys, many toys of the 1950s and early 1960s were based on characters and story ideas with their roots in the prewar period – so, of course I include them!

Was looking at Captain Midnight premiums and marveling at the transitions the character made from radio to movie serials to television. Three major mediums in a decade is an amazing achievement – though I suppose it’s comparable to a movie property going to a television show and into video games today.

What isn’t comparable is the quality of these premiums! Decoder badges were made of brass! The Secret Squadron New Official Code and Manual for 1948 looks like it could fool the worst of international despots threatening freedom. I think the coolest premium I ever got was the mail-away Han Solo in Stormtrooper Uniform with removable helmet from Kellogg’s in the mid-1990s. And I had to eat way too many boxes of sugary cereal to get him!

What was the coolest premium you ever found in a cereal box or sent away for? Click “Comments” below and let’s hear about all those boxes of sugar-laden cereal you had to eat!

Toyland News: New from Ertl
Posted by toy

The John Deere line from Ertl continues to impress with its diversity. One of the new releases coming soon is this 1:16-scale LA120 Lawn Tractor.

The life-sized LA120 is in current production from John Deere, and you can see its specifications here. The manufacturer’s list price for the little powerhouse is $1,849.

If collecting the real thing isn’t for you, I’d recommend this outstanding replica from Ertl. It can be had for around $16 from a farm toy dealer near you. (I’ve had some reports that this tractor won’t be shipping until January, so be sure to check with your favorite dealer and don’t blame Santa if you can’t have it on Christmas day!)

Charitable Contributions
Posted by toy

The holiday season is typically the time of year that most of us make contributions to our favorite charities. Those who itemize their tax returns are already well aware that charitable contributions are tax deductible, but did you know that contributions to your local library also qualify?

As most of you know, I’m also a columnist for Comics Buyer’s Guide magazine, and for years we’ve encouraged subscribers to donate a subscription to their local libraries. Well, you can receive a tax write-off for your good deed, whether the donation is a magazine subscription or the latest edition of Toys & Prices.

I spoke with a very nice representative of the IRS today who informed me that libraries are indeed a “qualified organization” under the IRS definition, and you may deduct the cost of new books given or magazine subscriptions donated. (Please check with your librarian before you sign up the library for the magazine you have in mind – if not familiar with the publication, the librarian will likely ask you to provide a sample issue.)

You need to keep a record of the item donated and its value along with the name and location of the institution you’re giving it to. Also note the date it was given, and that’s it. (We’re talking about donations less than $250 here -- greater amounts are addressed differently.)

For more information on Charitible Contributions go to the IRS website: www.irs.gov and download (for free) Publication #526. It’s only 23 pages, and you’ll find it very helpful.

Remember, you get the write-off for the year in which you make the donation, so if you donate a magazine subscription or a book to your library before December 31, you can claim the write-off on your 2007 tax return!

Just one book or one magazine can open the door to your favorite hobby for the members of your community – and you’ll receive a write-off in the process. It’s a win/win situation, so do something small to support your local libraries in a big way this holiday season!!

Collector's Guide To PEZ 3rd Edition
Posted by toy

Yes, we're working on a new edition of Shawn Peterson's best-selling PEZ book, the Collector's Guide to PEZ. At a hefty 256 pages, this 3rd Edition is the definitive guide to all things PEZ. Shawn includes a nice history of PEZ, Inc., great collecting advice, and information on the many conventions throughout the U.S. each year in addition to every great dispenser you can imagine.

Thought you might like to see the cover. Shawn sent us this great advertising piece, the PEZ girl, and a nifty idea for a drive-in kind of look. Designer David Jensen ran with the idea and added a touch of cool early '60s kitsch that makes it a real scream.

   Check it out:

Ideal Fix-It Tow Truck
Posted by toy

North Carolina collector Brian Moore recently responded to my open invitation to submit photos of toys not picutured in O'Brien's Collecting Toy Cars & Trucks. He sent some nice photos of the Ideal Fix-It Tow Truck and Car w/Dented Fender, No. 3001. The toy was produced from 1955-57.

Actually, I've never seen the set myself and have never run across it at a show. In the book I list "NPF" as the value for all three condition types because I've never run across a dealer selling one or an auction containing the piece.

Moore's piece is complete and in original condition -- he and his brother played with the toy, and have no idea what became of the original box.

What values would you assign to the Ideal Fix-It Tow Truck and Car w/Dented Fender in C6 (Excellent), C8 (Near Mint), and C10 (Mint without box) conditions? What premium above C10 would you add for a mint box? Click on "Comments" below and let me know!!
