Peotone Swap Meet
Posted by toy
I didn't think it was cold last Sunday morning until we started walking the outdoor portion of the swap meet sponsored by the Peotone Car Club. Brrrrrr!!! Needless to say, the outdoor vendors are hearty folks!
We ran into a ton of car enthusiast friends, and stopped to get caught up with everyone. That's half of the fun when you go to an early season swap meet -- everybody is ready to put winter behind them and start enjoying the old cars hobby.
Sorry if these picutres are out of focus, but I forgot my gloves and after a few minutes in that cold wind, my hands were shaking!
You get a little bit of everything at an early season show. Old cars and trucks are on display or for sale (top image), and there are always tons of parts to peruse. I didn't need Mustang parts (bottom image), but I imagine someone arrived who did.

Swap Meet in Peotone, IL
Posted by toy
Let’s face it, cabin fever has been tough this year—and I’m as desperate as everyone else to get out and enjoy my hobbies. When planning my weekend activities, I just had to find a toy show to attend, so I was very pleased to discover that the Beecher Farm Toy Show will happen tomorrow. With my Sunday open, I went straight to the Calendar section of Old Cars Weekly to find a swap meet. I’m in luck—the Peotone Car Club is hosting its 20th Annual Swap Meet on Sunday at the Will County Fairgrounds.
Here’s the info:
20th Annual Swap Meet
Peotone Car Club
Inside at the Will County Fairgrounds, Peotone, IL
Doors open at 8am
For information call Carl or Betty (708) 258-6920
Swap meets have a character all their own, and in the cold, damp mornings of early spring, they are among my favorite places to be. I might or might not find a useful car part, but I’m running low on shop cloths (you know—those red ones that you can’t live without) so I won’t leave empty handed. Besides, I like to support the activities of car clubs, so I’m sure to enjoy my trip to Peotone.
Car clubs are a topic I intend to visit in more depth, both here on my blog and in the pages of Old Cars Weekly, and I’m pleased that this swap meet is sponsored by the Peotone Car Club. I joined a car club this year, the Ford Galaxie Club of America, and am really enjoying the newsletters and all of the amazing knowledge of the club members.

Pomona Swap Meet
Posted by toy
There's nothing quite like a swap meet and car show to properly kick off your week. If you will be in Southern California this weekend, I'm green with envy. Sunday, January 13 is the first Pomona Swap Meet of the year, and I'm sure it's going to be a fun event.
Eight events are held throughout the year, so if you miss this weekend's show, not to worry, the next event is March 9.
For more information, go to: www.pomonaswapmeet.com
The show is open to all cars, but it does lean toward the hot rod crowd -- hey, it's Southern California! They have a great policy of giving free show admittance to stock condition pre-1931 cars that are driven in, so you just might see some gorgeous brass-era vehicles as well. They welcome pre-1975 collector cars, pre-1957 street rods, pre-1975 VWs, all Corvettes and Porsches.
It's a swap 'n show for early risers -- the gates open at 5am! Have fun, and if you attend, take some pictures and send 'em my way so I can post them here!

Gunner's in his Garage
Posted by toy
Because of my dad's interest in old cars and courtesy of his subscription to Old Cars Weekly, I've been reading the automotive writings of John Gunnell since I was a kid. I met John during my first week of employment here at Krause Publications -- he was gracious, made sure I knew where the free copies of the magazine were stored, and told me to help myself.
I called my dad that night with one of those "you're never gonna believe who I just met" stories that only come along once in a blue moon. When dad drove up here for the Iola Old Car Show that July, I introduced him to John -- which dad thought was pretty cool, indeed.
Actually, after a lifetime in the hobby, I've come to the conclusion that car people just love to hang out and talk cars with other car people. That's what I did every time I ran into John -- talked cars and car shows. And that's what I'll miss most about his "retiring" from Krause Publications last Friday. He's not retiring from writing, thankgoodness, he's actually embarking on the full-time freelance writing career we all dream of -- John will get to spend his days working on cars, writing about cars, and in his words, "take the laptop outside on nice days and enjoy my backyard while I write."
Congratulations Gunner, I'll see you at the car shows!

Hunnert Car Pile-Up
Posted by toy
A call from dad confirmed that he and his buddies are making the trip this Saturday (October 13) to Morris, Illinois, for the Hunnert Car Pile-Up. And I really wish I could go—after all, it was MY idea to go in the first place—alas, commitments in Wisconsin will prevent me from witnessing the Pile-Up in person.
What’s the Hunnert Car Pile-Up? No, it isn’t a demolition derby (good guess, though) it’s a traditional hot rod show open to 1940s, 1950s, and early 1960s style hot rods, custom cars, and custom motorcycles. The show organizers are serious about the admission criteria and have posted the requirements on their Web site www.hunnertcarpileup.com. As they state, “You wouldn’t want a sport tuner Honda Civic at your Model T show…would you?”
This show is a must see for anyone interested in traditional style customs. The Pile-Up also includes a full line-up of rockabilly, honky tonk, and garage pop bands—dancing in the aisles is encouraged. So stop watching old reruns of American Hot Rod or Hard Shine, and get out to the Grundy County Speedway and Fairgrounds on Saturday to live the real thing. Gates open at 9am.

"Orphan" Auto Picnic
Posted by toy
A few years ago, my dad and his friends (all old car fans and Old Cars Weekly readers, of course) attended an “Orphan” car show, and they came back with great stories about the show and the fabulous array of discontinued “Orphan” cars that appeared. He called last night to let me know that they’re going to this year’s event on Sunday – too bad I can’t go, my Olds Cutlass would be welcome.
“Orphans” are cars produced by companies that are no longer in business like Hudson, Nash, Kaiser, American Motors, and Packard among many others.
The Chicagoland Corvair Enthusiasts club hosts the show, and unlike the more formal settings of most shows, this one is a friendly backyard picnic. Literally. Bring your own lawn chairs and a picnic lunch, the club has grilles available for you to cook burgers and hot dogs (in other words, bring your own meat).
This year’s picnic is this Sunday, August 19, and if you’re in the vicinity, don’t miss it. Here’s the information:
17th Annual Orphan Auto Picnic
Sunday, August 19, 2007
11am to 5pm
1020 Aurora Ave.
Aurora, IL
