Vargas hottie - still turning heads 70 years later

Readers are commenting on a rather racy drawing heading to auction July 15. Some say the very first Vargas girl is a little too risque for Antique Trader readers.
One commenter said the image was perfectly acceptable in 1940- the year Alberto Vargas sketched the relining nude blond bombshell for the pages of Esquire Magazine. Vargas became one of the most prolific and popular pin up girl artist of all time. Not only are his actual images valuable (the original drawing is estimated to bring $20,000 to $30,000) but back issues of Esquire are more valuable because of Vargas' work.

Question of the week: statute of limitations on antiquity theft?

In this week's Antique Trader, we ran a couple of articles on antiquities being returned to their countries of origin. In one case, the antiquities were removed from Italy for two decades and sent to the States.
In the other case, antiquities were returned to Cambodia from Thailand.
These articles (and others that we've been reading in the news) lead us to ask you Antique Trader readers:

Star of the North will shine soon

Star of the North antique show at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds June 26-28, 2009.
The antique show will be held in the Education Building located near the entrance of the fairgrounds.
According to their press release:

You will see an exciting array of wonderful antiques in every category from Civil War, Historical, Political, advertising, coins, fine art glass, fine porcelains, flow blue china, paintings, Moser, jewelry, sterling silver matching service, art pottery, holiday collectibles, prints, decorative antiques, carnival glass, cut glass, Fenton glass, Cambridge, Royal Bayreuth, Royal Doulton, Nippon, hatpins, napkin rings, match safes, bookends, door stops, notary seals, postcards, ephemera, furniture, primitives, reference book seller and much, much more.

24 charged with Native American artifact looting

Exciting news ... especially when we just went to print yesterday with a front-page feature on collecting Native American artifacts ... Score one for the good guys!
From the LA Times:
24 charged in crackdown on Native American artifact looting
Reporting from Washington and Denver -- Striking at a longtime practice
in the Four Corners area, federal authorities Wednesday unsealed
indictments against 24 people in what they called the largest
investigation ever into the looting of Native American artifacts on
public lands.

This is an area of collecting where extreme caution must be exercised. There are only a handful of auction houses in the U.S. that handle reputable Native American artifacts (they're listed in the Antique Trader feature on collecting in this area).

Question of the Week: Getting in touch with other collectors

This week, we'd like to know how you get in touch with other collectors.
Do you network with folks with similar interests at shows and conventions? Or do you use online services like Facebook, My Space, or Twitter to get in touch with others who share your interests?
Or are you an "island" and keep to yourself when it comes to collecting?
I've not considered that option before ....

And time ticks away. Here it is, past six p.m. on Wednesday, and I haven't blogged since Saturday! Where did those days go!?
