Clearly, "lower listing fees" should be in quotes
Posted by Antique Trader Staff
I'm getting a tremendous amount of email from readers on our question of the week - see below - and I clearly should have put lower listing fees in quotation marks.
I apologize for the oversite, but love the passion that people are bringing to this argument, whether in support of the changes (a few) or against (most)... Alot of these responses will be in the 2-20 issue of Trader, with the rest online.
Meanwhile, keep responding, and keep on keeping me on the straight and narrow...

I am very concerned about the changes ebay is making and the emphasis it seems to be giving to its "power sellers." Power Sellers had to start somewhere and did not start as "Power Sellers." Although my husband and I am relatively small time sellers and do make some money from ebay, in order to make money we have to conduct research, take multiple pictures, edit them, make the posting, do the packaging and to the best of our ability keep our handling fees as low as possible, are we willing to put that work in for the drop in ebay sales (family members who also have stores have seen a significant drop in sales) when we cannot be protected from unscruplous purchasers? We are giving it serious consideration and looking for other options to sell our antique books and other antique items. We are angry about these changes. We are meeting with an auctioneer and once we finish downsizing, are seriously considering ending our relationship with ebay. We would be interested in knowing of other more seller friendly sites. Suggestions?

Noah:
I've been on ebay for 10 years. The first few, I sold, but since 1902, I been just a buyer. So, my comments come more from a buyer standpoint than a seller, but I try to consider the seller's view as well.
First, with respect to the 'lowering' of fees:
I had heard that the fees will be lowered only on higher end items. And, with respect to items listed at a lower price the fees will actually be higher!
If this is true, it seems as though ebay is trying to weed out the lower priced sellers. I am sure that this group is the bulk of ebay Sellers. They may not bring in the revenue per item that is derived from higher priced items. But, I would consider it probable that this group is the bulk of ebay sellers.
Back when I sold on ebay, I started my items at very low prices, with no reserve. The continual bidding, or the fear that someone will outbid you, usually brought the item to it's proper level. With this new fee structure, it will cost the Seller more to do this.
The result, less items listed at low starting bids, thus, less items being listed.
Maybe ebay wants to weed out these low priced sellers?
Second, I will address the fees that ebay had been charging:
Before this announcement (several weeks ago), I was considering listing several items on ebay.
Was I in for an awakening. They now have fees for everything you can think of. Sure, you can list an item at under $1.00 for only 20 cents, and get one picture. But, each and every thing has a price attached!
An example: if you would like the auction to start (and end) at a certain time, an extra fee! And, there are many more fees for just about anything you can think of.
This being the case, how much will it now cost to sell a low priced item???
I have many more problems with ebay that could be addressed, And may bring them up at another time.
I will close with the thought that maybe it is good that Meg Whitman is leaving. Her seemingly high-handed dealings with both Sellers and Buyers have brought Ebay to this point. Are they better???
